Copper cathodes are produced through a multi-stage process of mining, concentration, smelting, and finally, electrolytic refining. Impure copper (blister copper) is cast into anodes and placed in an electrolytic cell alongside starter sheets (cathodes). When an electric current is applied, copper from the anode dissolves into a copper sulfate electrolyte, and pure copper ions are deposited onto the starter cathode, increasing its thickness and purity to over 99.9%.
